From Thought to Canvas: A Creative Workshop on Visualization & Art with Karen Goldberg

Sunday, October 12th, from 2 – 4 pm, $30
Join me for a workshop that explores the fascinating connection between our inner world and artistic expression. This is more than just an art class—it’s an exploration of how your brain interprets abstract concepts and turns them into visual art.
What We’ll Be Doing:
To start off, we will talk about what it actually means to visualize something.
Our brains are pretty amazing. Sometimes we do things without even
thinking—like turning off the coffee pot before leaving the house, and then
later wondering, “Wait… did I actually turn it off?” That’s your brain on
autopilot.
In this workshop, I’m going to ask you to slow things down a bit. You’ll take
some time to really think about a few ideas and phrases—and then you’ll turn
those thoughts into art.
I’ll give you a bunch of open-ended, interpretive phrases to choose
from—here’s some examples: “Beneath the Surface”, “The Weight of
Silence”, “Half of a Memory”. You’ll pick one phrase that stands out to you
or feels meaningful in some way. Then, you’ll try to visualize what that phrase
looks like in your mind.
Think of it this way: if I say the word “apple,” you probably picture something
like a shiny red fruit with a stem and maybe a leaf. That mental image is your
visualization. Now take that same idea and apply it to a more abstract phrase,
like “Beneath the Surface.” Maybe it brings to mind colors or shapes, or
maybe you picture the ocean or something hidden underground. There’s no
right or wrong—whatever comes to mind is your visualization.
That mental image will be the starting point for your painting.
Once everyone’s finished, we’ll take some time to share our work and talk
about what the phrases meant to each of us.
We’ll have art supplies available, but feel free to bring your own if you’d rather
use those.
