Tuesday night open studio figure drawing

“The object isn’t to make art, its to be in that wonderful state which makes art inevitable.” – Robert Henri

Tuesday nights are groovy nights at the Space!  We  put on some good tunes, bring our favorite art materials and get into that ‘wonderful state’.  A different nude model poses each week, serving as our muse in our pursuit of creative expression.  Through the process of observation and mark making we challenge how we see, and what we want to say.  We observe the nuances of the impermanent human form, its moods, character, and light, and try our best to capture something in the moment that tells a story.  All skill levels are welcome.  We have even had poets drop in and compose verses to the vibe in the room.

This community of artists has become a tight knit and supportive group of seekers who are curious about capturing the human form.  Use the opportunity to refine your skills, experiment with different media, and develop your understanding of anatomy, gesture, and proportion.  Challenge your understanding of your process as an artist, or develop a process if you’re new to it.  Challenge how you see the world.  Understand your hand eye coordination and how your inner state affects and reflects it.  Learn to see and observe.

Each session will feature a variety of poses, ranging from quick gesture drawings to longer, more detailed studies.  Whether you’re looking to sharpen your technical abilities, loosen up your line work, or simply enjoy the process of drawing from life, this open studio is designed to support individual artistic growth in a collaborative atmosphere.

Materials such as charcoal, graphite, ink, pastels and paints are welcome, and basic drawing supplies can be provided upon request. No formal instruction is provided, but the space offers opportunities for peer feedback and self-guided practice.
