Adorned: Identity, Ritual, and Transformation

On view November 16 – January 18, 2026

Opening reception is Sunday, November 16th, 2 – 5 pm

The Space is proud to present Adorned, a landmark exhibit featuring the powerful and intricate works of Gerardo Castro, Lori Field, and Danielle Scott.

This exhibition explores the concept of “adornment” as a profound act of identity, ritual, and transformation. Moving far beyond simple decoration, these three artists utilize embellishment as a language to tell stories, build worlds, and reveal the sacred.

Adorned invites you into a space of layered meaning: from the spiritually charged, glittering icons of Castro’s Afro-Caribbean dreamscapes, to the fantastical, tattooed hybrids of Field’s mythic realities, and the politically potent, assembled identities of Scott’s cultural portraits. This collection is a visual feast of texture, color, and narrative, asking us what it means to be adorned—by culture, by memory, by magic, and by choice.

Join us for the Opening Reception on Sunday, November 16 and be the first to experience this stunning exhibition.

About the Artists

Gerardo Castro (1967 – 2024)

Gerardo Castro is an Afro-Caribbean artist whose spiritually charged paintings explore the vibrant multiplicity of his heritage. His work delves into themes of colonization, queer history, and ritual, creating dazzling, elaborate, and glittery figurative paintings that he views as “doorways to the sacred.” Drawing on references from Magic Realism to Santeria shrines, Castro’s “adorned” figures are mystical, powerful icons that celebrate marginalized histories and complex identities.

Lori Field

Lori Field creates “dreamy yet unsettling” narrative worlds populated by fantastical, hybrid beings. Her impossibly intricate mixed-media works, which often incorporate encaustic, colored pencil, collage, and thread, depict part-human, part-animal figures “adorned” with tattoos, lace, and symbolic baubles. These “angels with attitude” exist in a mythic demimonde, exploring themes of vulnerability, alienation, and transformation with a dark, fairy-tale allure.

Danielle Scott

Danielle Scott is a mixed-media assemblage artist whose work is a “brazen offering” of politically and socially charged messages. As an Afro-Cuban and Polish-Jewish woman, she explores the complex intersections of identity, social justice, and cultural heritage. Using photo montage, found objects, paint, and collage, Scott “adorns” her subjects with layers of history and raw materials, creating powerful portraits that challenge societal narratives and celebrate resilient, self-defined beauty.

Check out The Adorned MarketSpace opening on Black Friday, November 28th. The MarketSpace is a curated artisan market where shoppers can purchase beautiful, handcrafted ceramics, sculpture, jewelry, and accessories from local artisans. Instead of giving your hard-earned money to big-box stores, support local artisans and give your loved ones one-of-a-kind handcrafted gifts this holiday season.

Accessibility: The Space is located on the second floor of a historic building, accessible via a flight of stairs. Unfortunately, there is no elevator access at this time. This means we are unable to accommodate wheelchairs or guests with significant mobility challenges. We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

In conjunction with the Adorned exhibit, the Adorned MarketSpace will take place every weekend between Thanksgiving and Christmas.  Here you will find local artisans selling exceptional quality jewelry, artwork, prints, ceramics and other hand made giftable items.  The treasures will all be within keeping of the Adorned spirit of decoration, so come shop locally.  You will truly be supporting local talent, and bringing economic power to the artists whose talent we need to  build the fabric of our culture.
