Sunday, August 3, from 2 – 3:30 pm, $20 per person
This is a workshop where we explore seeing deeply with our eyes and our hearts. It allows space to question how we look at things, to see one another and to be seen, and to learn how to represent the eyes realistically and symbolically with paint, pencils and paper.
There is something powerful about drawing and painting eyes, whether human or animal. They reflect our soul and allow us to perceive the world. Humans have painted them since the beginning of time as talismans, in abstract form, and in realistic interpretations to capture an individual personality.
The workshop will begin with a guided visualizing meditation, seated with eyes closed. We will do some breath work and some quick gentle movement to get us grounded into our bodies and relaxed.
Then we will move into some fun and easy exercises that involve seeing and being seen by one another. We will start the art making portion with easy symbology and also learn how to render the eyes realistically. We will be painting with watercolor and tempera paints as well as layering with colored pencils to achieve more detail. Then you will have the chance to work on your own and be as loose as you like and make as many eyes as you desire. You can create images rendering stories about the eyes, or just listen to your intuitive flow and see what visions want to emerge. There will be reference photos of various human and animal eyes available, and you can bring your own. You can be as realistic or as stylized as you want to be.
This is also a fun project to do with a friend or loved one, so come in pairs!
This project is part of an ongoing large scale assemblage piece that is a collage of many eyes. Those who want to contribute to it can leave behind a drawing and painting. The greater assemblage will be displayed in the gallery in the fall.
What is Sunday Art Church at the Space?
Every Sunday afternoon the Space has a creative workshop happening. It’s about getting into flow state and opening up our creative channels. We are ALL creative. The mediums may vary, but regardless of our mode of expression we all have an innate desire to create. Tapping into meditation and breath-work is a great way to turn off the mind for a moment, put aside the stories we tell ourselves about what we can’t do, turn down the volume of those voices that told us long ago that we weren’t capable or that we didn’t know how, and silence all the excuses we come up with for why we don’t express our creativity. It’s a chance to drop into the here and now and create. That is flow state. It’s just being in the creative spirit, without judgment or worry or consideration of outcome. There are so many modalities that help us achieve this – it could be meditation, sound healing, breath-work, or a guided visioning exercise. The expression can look like painting, dancing, singing, making music, writing, or collage. We have incredible facilitators, a safe space, and a loving community of support. Every Sunday, we are here to bear witness to the creative spirit.
